Decision guide

Vane vs Perplexity

Vane is an open-source, self-hosted alternative to Perplexity for people willing to operate their own AI search setup. Both products aim to answer questions with source links. Choose Vane if control over models and setup is worth the maintenance; choose Perplexity if you want a hosted service without running it yourself.

Feature comparison from each product's published pages, checked October 22, 2026. We have not measured answer quality, speed, or cost on a matched set of questions.

The practical differences

Who hosts it?You run the open-source application. You use a hosted service.
What powers search? The official Docker image bundles SearXNG.Perplexity operates its own web answer service.
Can you choose a local model?Vane supports Ollama. Its standard product is a hosted experience.
Who maintains it?You handle setup, updates, and availability.Perplexity runs the service.
Are answers sourced? The project describes cited answers.Perplexity describes cited answers.

Privacy and cost boundaries

Self-hosting Vane gives you control over its application and data storage. The official answer-flow guide says research may include web lookup when needed; the project README identifies SearXNG as the web search layer and Ollama or cloud model options. A live web search can therefore reach external search services, and a cloud model receives the data sent to that provider. With Ollama, model inference can stay on your machine. Hardware, electricity, VPS hosting, and paid model APIs remain possible costs. See the data-flow explanation and cost guide.

Which should you choose?

Choose Vane if controlling the stack and model choice matter enough to justify installation and maintenance. Choose Perplexity if you want to start asking questions without running a search service yourself. For research quality, inspect citations and run matched questions; this guide does not claim that either product answers more accurately.

Are Vane's citations more accurate than Perplexity's?

We cannot establish that from product documentation or an unmatched example. Both products provide source links, but a link can still fail to support an answer. Compare them with the same questions, record the Vane model and search settings, and inspect each cited page. This guide has not run that matched test.

A fair test to run yourself

For an initial check, try the same five questions in both products and inspect every citation. For a publishable comparison, use the 10–20 question protocol: record versions, model and search settings, full answers, source support, time, failures, and cost assumptions. This site has not run that matched test, so it does not name an accuracy or speed winner.

Want to try the self-hosted path?

Begin with the Docker installation guide, then connect a model using the Ollama guide.
