About this independent guide

About and editorial method

Vane Field Guide is an independent reference for people deciding whether Vane is a useful open-source alternative to Perplexity. JJ edits the site. We are not affiliated with Vane or Perplexity, do not host a Vane instance, and do not claim a hands-on benchmark that we have not performed.

What this site answers

The homepage addresses the phrase vane open source perplexity alternative. Seven guides cover product identity, alternatives, costs, the Perplexica name change, Vane versus Perplexity, Docker installation, and Ollama connection. Six separate ChatGPT conversations were used to identify question themes. They are research prompts, not proof of search volume, product quality, or future AI citations.

How claims are labeled

Evidence labels used across this guide
LabelWhat it establishesWhat it does not establish
Published documentationA linked official repository or product page describes a feature, command, or configuration. That a setup worked on our machine or that a result is accurate.
Editorial inferenceA conditional recommendation follows from documented capabilities and a stated use case.A measured performance or cost advantage.
Hands-on testA dated run with versions, configuration, raw outputs, and checks that readers can inspect.A universal result for every model, machine, or later release.

As of October 22, 2026, our Vane installation and Vane-versus-Perplexity pages are documentation-based. No matched answer-quality, citation-accuracy, speed, or cost results have been published here.

How sources and updates are handled

For Vane architecture, setup, and troubleshooting, start with the official Vane repository, its answer-flow documentation, and relevant installation or API pages linked at the claim. For other tools, follow their linked primary project pages. We show a source-check date on every guide. Repository links to master can change; the displayed date is an editorial check date, not a pinned software version or proof of a running installation. Recheck any command against your installed release before using it.

When a documented fact changes, we update the affected statement and its check date. An individual community report is a lead to investigate, not a universal product defect. We do not invent an author credential, technical reviewer, fixed hardware minimum, or product score.

A reproducible comparison protocol

Before publishing a Vane versus Perplexity test, choose 10–20 questions spanning stable facts, current facts, technical troubleshooting, product comparison, and multi-source synthesis. Publish the question list and every result, including failures. Run both services as close together in time as practical; record Vane commit or release, model, search mode, SearXNG configuration, hardware, and Perplexity plan or mode. Different model settings limit what the comparison can prove.

  1. Save each full answer and all visible source links.
  2. Check whether each source opens and supports the specific claim attached to it; mark unsupported claims separately from missing links.
  3. Record start-to-complete response time, errors, retries, and whether the question was answered completely.
  4. Record API, hosting, hardware, electricity, and maintenance assumptions before any cost comparison.
  5. Publish the scoring rubric, raw records, test date, setup, and limitations alongside any summary. Do not declare a universal winner from one run.

Use the comparison guide for a shorter reader checklist. The protocol above is a plan; it is not an assertion that this site has run the benchmark.
